Staff Attorney - Housing Law

SUPERVISOR: Managing Attorney - Camden County Neighborhood Office

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Housing Law Staff Attorney provides the highest quality of legal service to SJLS clients in a variety of housing law matters, including evictions, termination of housing subsidies, displacement and relocation, and other landlord-tenant and housing matters affecting poor people. The Staff Attorney will act as a liaison between SJLS and the local community and bar associations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Handle intake interviews;
Provide direct representation to clients in a variety of housing law matters, including evictions, termination of housing subsidies, displacement and relocation, and other landlord-tenant and housing matters affecting poor people;
Participate in group representation where appropriate;
Participate in staff and case acceptance and other unit and program meetings;
Work with the Managing Attorney, the Senior Attorney, and others in the delivery of legal services;
Work with the Managing Attorney, the Senior Attorney, and others in planning, developing and litigating significant impact cases;
Participate in community outreach and community legal education;
Develop new ideas and methods to provide service to clients;
Work with other staff as an effective member of the team;
Assist in supervising paralegals, clerical workers and students;
Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:
Admission to the Bar of New Jersey preferred but not required. Must be a member of the Bar in any State and/or be eligible and willing to take the next available New Jersey Bar Exam. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to relate to low income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service.
Must have use of a vehicle.

Community Outreach & Education Paralegal
South Jersey Legal Services is seeking to hire a Community Outreach & Education Paralegal to work in the Community Economic Development (CED) Unit. Although based in the Camden office, the CED Paralegal will be engaged in CED activities throughout the SJLS service area and will engage in work on a program-wide basis as needed. Substantial additional evening work, occasional weekend work, and travel throughout the service area will be required.

The CED Paralegal's duties include:

Engaging in strategic efforts to assist low-income community based organizations to become economically self-sufficient, improve neighborhoods, and provide needed services to residents. CED activities include, but are not limited to, job creation, development and preservation of affordable housing, child care, and neighborhood planning.
Under the supervision on attorney in the CED Unit, provide legal information, advice, and representation to eligible community groups and non-profit organizations in matters such as incorporation, organizational issues, real estate, tax, land use, contracts, etc.
Assisting in impact litigation related to CED activities, including preservation and creation of affordable housing, redevelopment, neighborhood planning, access to jobs, and environmental justice issues.
Facilitating development and evaluation of CED regional needs assessment; and work with CED Coordinator and CED staff in making recommendations on CED strategic planning and resource allocation.
Coordinating, facilitating and/or attending community meetings and events.
Organizing and conducting community outreach and legal education sessions.
Assisting client-eligible groups w/ organizational development.
And other paralegal related duties as assigned.
Eligible candidates must have five (5) years experience in legal services; a demonstrated commitment to and experience working with culturally diverse low-income community groups and non-profit organizations encompassing urban, rural and suburban communities;
use of an automobile; a demonstrated depth of experience in the area of community organization, community education, advocacy and public speaking;
and fluency in English and Spanish required.

Temporary Attorney
A 12-month position to provide legal services to clients in a variety of family matters involving the Division of Youth & Family Services (DYFS). Although based in the Camden office, the Temporary Attorney will engage in work on a program-wide basis and act as a liaison between SJLS and the local community. Extensive travel is involved.

Eligible candidates must be admitted to the Bar of New Jersey or a member of the Bar in any State and/or be eligible and willing to take the next available New Jersey Bar Exam, be able to relate to low income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service and must have use of a car.
